For this week’s TDOW, we decided to pick a dog that has been with us almost daily for the past few months. A daycare regular, Frankie the Hound would also win a ‘Most Improved’ award if we gave one out. Frankie did not have the easiest childhood, and was growing up pretty fast when his owner scooped him up from a local shelter and started showing him love and care. Despite his tough start, it has not affected his attitude one bit as he is one of the most loving and good natured dogs that has come through our door in quite some time. Since Frankie’s background is a little bit of an unknown, we decided to do our Breed Highlight on the Black and Tan Coonhound as they seem to share quite a few physical and temperamental qualities.
Frankie the Hound, this weeks Top Dog of the Week!
The Black and Tan Coonhound has been around for quite some time. A great dog to have around if you have a family, the Black and Tan Coonhound has a great sense of authority and protection. Born to hunt by trade, even household hounds are heavily scent-driven and you will see them from time to time nose-down tail-up hunting around the house or in the yard for whatever has their attention. Since they were originally bred to be a hunter’s companion most hounds still have the need to get a lot of daily exercise in, making them less than ideal for small home owners or homes without a yard. Regardless, their love and compassion has won over the hearts of many individuals hence why so many are bred today for companionship and not so much for hunting anymore. If you do want a hunting hound though, the Black and Tan Coonhound is also known to perform well with big game and not just small mammals like raccoon, etc. Protective and slightly possessive, these dogs are one of a kind. If your looking for a trainable, reliable partner look no further!

Picking out a place to keep your pet for overnight stays can be no easy task. You know whats best for them, you know their behaviors and what makes them click, what scares them and what excites them. Leaving your pet in a foreign place away from their own home can be exhausting both for you and your pet. Luckily, you have options. With so many different places to choose from the team here at Top Dog Kennel wanted to give you some ideas on what makes a kennel GREAT, and what separates us from the rest of the pack.
Every dog is not the same. Some dogs need attention 24/7. Some dogs need to sit on a lap each day to feel whole. Others would be happy if they did not have to see you at all and they could sit in the sun in peace until nightfall. At Top Dog, we strive to give every dog the individual attention it deserves. Nowadays it seems all too common that most pets are expected to run on preset schedules and rituals. We don’t do that here. Every owner is asked a series of questions at check-in that will shape how their pet is handled during their stay at Top Dog Kennel. From play packages to the types of food they eat, your pets stay will be tailored to the experience YOU want it to be. Which leads into the next point..
Our team is small and experienced. The truth is, it is easy for an employee to tell a customer rules and regulations that they follow but that rarely speaks for all staff as a whole. In kennels, it is very rare for all the staff to work at the same time and even rarer to have every employee administer the same level of care for every animal. At Top Dog Kennel, we have two individuals responsible for the daily care and upkeep of the kennel and boarders so we can say with confidence your pet will receive the utmost level of respect and attention during their stay with us. The owner, Nick Frost, is a multi-award winning groomer/breeder with over 30 years of experience in each respective practice. The relations between customers and employees here is close, and we are always looking to make new friends and family!
We have the best rates in the Asheville area, and will price-match any kennel within 25 miles. We like working hard for the hard workers! We love what we do here and would not want it to change for the world. To make sure of that, we offer the lowest rates in the Asheville area so you can go on your vacation without breaking the bank. We may not have TV’s for every space but we have enough going on that your pet WILL sleep soundly each night after a full day of stimulation and fun!
We offer pictures and videos of your pet through text or email. Receive them at the frequency you desire! Just ask at check-in and leave a number! Wherever you will be, it will bring a smile to your face seeing your pup having fun and enjoying life while you are away.
As stated earlier, there are tons of options to choose from when picking where to board your pet and for that reason we do all we can to put ourselves above and beyond our competitors. We are located on 2.5 acres of wooded land about 7 miles east of downtown Asheville. We offer daily walks and playtime with other dogs as well as a list of other services, all tailored to fit your personal needs. Not going out of town? Still stop on by and get your pet groomed, or just drop them off for the day and take full advantage of our Doggy Daycare service. We hope to hear from you soon!

This weeks TDOW award goes to a dog that is very special to us, Tessa the Havanese. Tessa has been nothing short of spectacular during her stay here at Top Dog. A very loving and soulful dog, Tessa definitely brought some light to us during the stormy days we had last week! Here is a little tidbit on the Havanese breed.
Top Dog of the Week for March W02! Tessa the Havanese!
The Havanese that we know today became popular in the United States after the Cuban revolution, which ended in 1959. The breed was always a top pick among the wealthy citizens of Cuba, and although many believe the Havanese originated in Cuba (Havana..Havanese..get it?) the breed may actually be from the island of Malta, an archipelago located in the Mediterranean Sea.
A breed member of the Bichon family, a Havanese is small in size with a very loving temperament. These dogs make great pets for households with kids and they can do exceptionally well with other animals you may have living with you already. The Havanese are a generally healthy breed with no notable issues at birth and their life span is average in comparison to other dogs of their size (generally around 12-14 years, that being a healthy dog). Be warned though, as over time their coats are subject to stain and it is suggested to get your Havanese groomed periodically. If you have a Havanese and do not know a quality place that grooms, our very own Nick Frost has years of experience in grooming with an expert touch on special breeds.

Your support means the world to us, and it is how we continue to be the leader in animal hospitality in the Asheville area.
The staff here at Top Dog are pleased to announce Meya as the winner of the Top Dog of the Week award! Meya is a wonderful Great Dane and never fails to come in a positive mood. Have you always wanted a Great Dane for your home? Here are some facts and tidbits on the Great Dane breed.
Meya, Top Dog of the Week!
Although many believe the Dane to be of Danish decent, the breed was actually developed by the Germans towards the end of the 19th century. They are a large dog, but not overtly full or heavy in the legs. Since they are an intelligent breed, they make excellent watchdogs and companions for all types of households. Be warned though, because of the size it is strongly suggested to own a moderate to large home with a yard to match. They shed an average amount, no more or less than the normal dog and do not require any special treatment when it comes to grooming. Due to the size though you may be paying a little extra! The Great Dane is slowly finding more popularity over in United State homes and as the trend continues we hope to be able to see more here with us at Top Dog.
Thanks for reading! As always we strive to give your pet the utmost care and respect during their visit at Top Dog and be sure to ask how your pet can be next weeks Top Dog of the Week!
Here we have Barbosa, Barney, Jefferson and Tammy enjoying a pleasant afternoon play session before the winter season arrives! When pet boarding here at Top Dog Kennel we encourage our animals to stretch their legs and get the blood pumping everyday to ensure we are keeping all our dogs nothing but happy and healthy!
When pet boarding, it is vital that your pet gets fresh air and stays on a schedule where he/she gets to work off the boredom and frustrations of being away from home. Exercise promotes healthy functioning of your dogs metabolism and is a good natural way of getting rid of anxiety most pets may feel when they are being boarded for the first time. These feelings can permeate your pet for the first few days when pet boarding and are not at all uncommon behaviors. There are many long term benefits to keeping your dogs on a daily exercise regiment. Healthy dogs and healthy functioning of vital organs in your pets increase the likelihood of prolonging their lives drastically. Daily exercise as opposed to house-kept dogs could make the difference of YEARS.
A healthy dog is also a dog that eats healthy. Choosing the right diet for your dog is just as essential as getting your pet on the right exercise routine. The brand of dog food, the nutritional value and additives that make up your choice brand of food, the amounts and time of day you feed your pet, all these are factors that are brought in when choosing what diet suits your pet and their needs the best.
Here at Top Dog Kennel we strive to create an atmosphere that encourages a healthy balance of freedom and play as well as letting our boarders socialize with each other to maximize the time spent with us, before they get to go back home with you!
